This is an absolute scam. I work for Revenue Canada (CRA) and I can assure that CRA will never use automated calling. Other signs that calls from this number are a scam: - caller does not provide details about who the call is from, or who the call is intended for - if you call this number back they are unable to "locate your file" by just using the phone number (even though they just called you and threatened you on the same number !!) . This is big red flag. - CRA will not leave voice messages with sensitive information - If there is an issue with your tax returns, CRA will make all efforts to speak directly to the taxpayer (not the spouse, nor any relative, as information on the tax returns is confidential). CRA will NEVER contact your relatives or family members to get a hold of you - If there is issue with you taxes (or tax returns), CRA will ALWAYS send a letter (either before or after talking to the taxpayer over the phone) detailing the issue (but be aware now days scammers are able to duplicate CRA letters (I have seen these letters and I can't tell the difference!) - If there is an audit/review of your tax returns, CRA will ALWAYS allow you to the opportunity and time to provide evidence that the information on your tax return is correct (if there is an issue or dispute). CRA will NEVER initiate contact with threats and/or legal action (this is the very last step the CRA can take, but it is most certainly NEVER the first!) My mother got a call from these scammers and thankfully she called me rather than taking any action. DO NOT call this number back. If you do, do not provide your name or address. You do not want to give these people any personal info. Please, make yourself, and the ones you know, aware of these scams and think critically before responding to such calls. You can also head to the CRA website (Canada.ca) to gain more information on these scams. I hope this helps.
